EUR/USD traded near 1.1205 on October 14, 2026, just above 1.1200. Traders weighed French fiscal concerns against September US CPI, due later Wednesday. The report could change expectations for Federal Reserve rates, while French bond yields and the European Central Bank outlook add separate pressures. These forces keep the EUR/USD outlook tied to both US data and European risk.
US CPI and the Fed outlook
The immediate macro focus is September US CPI. Forecasts call for headline inflation of 3.6% year over year, up from 3.4% previously. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, is expected at 2.5% year over year after 2.4% in the prior reading. Traders can follow the release through the official US Consumer Price Index page.
How CPI could change rate expectations
A result above or below forecasts could shift expectations for US rates. New York Fed President John Williams said one more increase may be appropriate in 2026, but he sees no need for another in 2027. That leaves room for one additional move this year while signaling a pause next year.
Speechtracker, a gauge of Fed officials’ tone, stood at 3.4 out of 10 versus a historical reading of 5.8. The Fed sentiment index was 133.86, down 3.09 but still above 100, a level associated with hawkish views. In plain terms, the readings suggest that officials’ tone has softened, while policy expectations remain cautious. CPI could strengthen or weaken that message.
French fiscal risks and euro valuation
France remains a major European risk factor for the single currency. French borrowing costs are at their highest in nearly 25 years, while the French 10-year yield premium over Italian bonds reached a record. Those developments keep attention on the fiscal risk premium investors require to hold French debt.
ING estimates EUR/USD is about 1.5% undervalued relative to short-term fundamentals. However, it also warns that the French risk premium could widen. Its framework identifies an OAT-Bund spread below the 150 to 160 basis-point area if a budget is adopted by decree. The condition matters because a contained spread would ease one channel of pressure on the euro, while a wider premium would underscore fiscal uncertainty.
The valuation estimate does not mean the currency must rebound. A risk premium can widen if financing concerns intensify, and a favorable relative-valuation measure can coexist with weak near-term price action. For more market context, visit CoreAster.
ECB pricing and the EUR/USD outlook
Rate pricing gives the euro another important reference. A December ECB rate increase is fully priced, whereas an October move is considered unlikely. That distinction means expectations for December are already reflected in the market to a greater extent than expectations for an imminent action.
ING projects EUR/USD at 1.13 in the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027. It also identifies 1.1100 as a downside risk level. These are attributed forecasts rather than certainties. They sit beside the possibility that US CPI changes the relative-rate narrative quickly, especially if the reading shifts expectations for the Fed’s remaining 2026 decisions.
ECB appearances, including remarks from President Christine Lagarde, add another source of guidance. Yet with the December move already fully priced, additional hawkish signals may have a limited ability to surprise unless officials materially change expectations for the timing or size of policy action.
EUR/USD technical snapshot
What the technical indicators show
The technical picture was cautious at the time of the snapshot. The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI), which measures recent price momentum, was 31. Spot also traded below the Bollinger middle band and its 100-day simple moving average. These indicators describe recent price action; they do not determine what happens next.
| Indicator or level | Snapshot | Market context |
|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD spot | About 1.1205 | Early Asian trade |
| RSI (14) | 31 | Technical snapshot |
| Support | 1.1100 | Identified downside risk level |
| Resistance | 1.1310, 1.1480, about 1.1520 | Levels above spot |
On the upside, the cited resistance levels are 1.1310, 1.1480 and roughly 1.1520. On the downside, 1.1100 is the stated support. A sustained move below support would reinforce the bearish tone described in the snapshot, while a recovery toward the listed resistance areas would put the moving-average and band structure back in focus.
Use the levels as reference points, not promises; they can change as price moves. For now, the euro’s hold above 1.1200 puts CPI, Fed expectations and France’s borrowing costs at the center of the outlook. This article is for information only, not investment or trading advice.
