Fed rate hike outlook expectations now point to a short extension of the tightening cycle rather than a single move. UOB expects additional 25-basis-point hikes in December 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, followed by a prolonged hold as inflation gradually fades.

The expected policy path

UOB’s economics team interprets the latest FOMC decision as more than a one-and-done hike, but less than the start of a long series of increases. Its base case includes a 25-basis-point move in December 2026 and another in the first quarter of 2027, followed by a hold through the rest of 2027.

This path assumes inflation becomes more durable in the later part of 2027. It also means markets may remain highly sensitive to every inflation and energy headline because the expected path has only a limited number of hikes priced into it.

Why inflation risks remain high

Federal Reserve inflation risks from energy tariffs and AI
Energy, tariffs and AI-related pressures could keep inflation above target

UOB identifies higher energy prices, trade tariffs and AI-related factors as risks that could make inflation more persistent. If these forces keep prices elevated, the Fed could tighten more than the base case. If they fade, the central bank could stop earlier and allow restrictive policy to work through the economy.

Why October may be skipped

UOB rules out a back-to-back October hike because of the meeting’s proximity to the November 3 mid-term elections. That does not remove policy risk. It simply makes December the next major decision point for markets assessing whether the Fed is extending the cycle.

Period Base-case expectation Market focus
December 2026 25bp hike Whether inflation remains persistent
1Q 2027 Another 25bp hike Evidence of durable disinflation
Rest of 2027 Hold Growth and eventual easing expectations

What markets should watch

A hawkish scenario would combine stronger energy prices, tariff pass-through and continued AI investment pressure with resilient demand. Treasury yields could rise and the Dollar could strengthen as traders price a higher terminal rate.

A softer scenario would see inflation moderate, growth lose momentum and the Fed pause after the expected extension. Equities and bonds could benefit from lower-rate expectations, although a sharp growth slowdown would introduce a separate risk.
